Storage prices have gone in one direction lately, and it is not down. With even a basic 2TB SSD creeping past $250, a lot of PC gamers are stuck making painful choices about which 100GB titles get to stay installed. That is the exact problem Game Compressor was built to solve, and after digging into the numbers, it is doing it better than most people expected from a five-dollar Steam app.

 

The tool does not touch your files in any destructive way. It leans on Windows‘ own built-in LZX compression, the same technology that has quietly existed inside Windows 10 and 11 for years, and wraps it in an interface simple enough that you never have to open a command prompt. You point it at your game folders, it scans your library, and it shows you an estimate of how much space each title could give back before you commit to anything.

 

What the real numbers actually look like

This is where it gets interesting. Reported results from actual users vary wildly, and that is honestly the most believable part of the story. One Steam reviewer with a 509GB library said they clawed back around 260GB, with Assetto Corsa alone giving up more than 50GB. Another user going through a full library cleanup mentioned reclaiming 353GB, and there is at least one report floating around of a total 793GB saved across a very large collection.

 

I’ve been following this for a while, and honestly, the spread in results is what makes it trustworthy. Tom’s Hardware found that ARK: Survival Evolved dropped from 169GB down to 91GB, a 54% reduction, while Crimson Desert lost about 32GB. But not every title cooperates. Cyberpunk 2077 barely budged in some tests, going from 84GB to 82GB, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance shaved off less than half a gigabyte. Games that are already tightly packed by their developers just do not have much fat left to trim.

 

Why some games shrink and others barely move

The pattern comes down to file structure. Titles built from thousands of loose, uncompressed assets tend to compress beautifully, sometimes losing half their footprint. Games that ship with their own internal compression or heavy encryption, on the other hand, give the tool almost nothing to work with. According to reports from Steam’s own discussion boards, Battlefield 6 and Forza Horizon 5 only returned 4 to 6GB in savings for one user, while other titles in the same library gave up ten times that.

 

Personally, I think that is the detail most coverage glosses over. It’s not a magic wand that shrinks everything equally, and going in expecting a flat 50% cut across your whole library is going to leave you disappointed. What it actually does is let you pick your battles, compressing the handful of bloated titles that are genuinely worth the trouble and leaving the rest alone.

 

The speed question nobody expected

Here’s what’s interesting: compression does not seem to be slowing games down, and in some cases it may even help. A widely shared story about a user named IridiumIO compressing 60 games and reclaiming 380GB pointed out that on a mechanical hard drive, a modern CPU can actually decompress data faster than the drive can read it raw. On an SSD the effect is smaller, but Game Compressor’s own developer has argued that since compression only happens once, gameplay itself only ever triggers reads, and those reads move less physical data than before.

 

That claim lines up with how Windows’ native compression has always worked. It is transparent to the operating system, meaning games load the files normally without any manual extraction step. From my experience following utilities like this, that transparency is what separates a genuinely useful tool from something that just repackages 7 Zip and calls it a day.

 

It is not the only option, and it was not the first.

Game Compressor did not invent this idea. Tools like CompressorX and the free, open-source CompactGUI have offered similar functionality for a while, and CompactGUI in particular has a loyal following among people who do not want to pay anything at all. What Game Compressor adds is automation. It includes an option to auto compress new games as soon as they finish downloading and a smart pause feature that is supposed to detect when you are actively playing and step out of the way so compression tasks do not eat your CPU mid-game.

 

Sources suggest the developer is actively iterating based on user feedback, with hotfixes rolling out for stability issues and UI bugs that showed up during Early Access. It is rumored that a more polished, fully stable release is being prepared, since several reviews mention freezes and screens that do not update properly during long compression jobs.

 

Is it actually worth the risk

The app is currently sitting at Very Positive on Steam, with 82% of around 200 reviews approving. That is a solid number for a utility that is, at its core, a friendlier wrapper around something Windows already does for free. If the current trajectory holds, it looks like tools in this space will keep gaining traction as game sizes keep climbing faster than storage budgets do.

 

What most articles missed is that this only works on Windows 10 and 11, since it depends on NTFS. Steam Deck users running SteamOS are out of luck entirely, though those running Windows on their handhelds, including devices like the ROG Ally and Legion Go, are fully supported. That is a meaningful gap for the growing handheld crowd, and it is one of the more overlooked limitations in the coverage so far.

 

This is one of those things I genuinely got excited about the moment I saw the numbers. A five-dollar tool that can hand back a few hundred gigabytes without deleting a single game feels like the kind of fix that should have existed years ago. Game Compressor will not shrink every title in your library, and it clearly still has some rough edges to smooth out, but for anyone staring down a full drive and a backlog of games they refuse to uninstall, it is one of the more genuinely useful releases Steam has seen in a while.
